A Luxe Dream at Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur
Why a Stay at Taj Lake Palace Udaipur is a Bucketlist Trip: My Honest Review & Must-Know Tips
If you’re planning a trip to Udaipur, staying at the Taj Lake Palace is a dream come true. It’s one of the most iconic luxury hotels in the city, and it’s easy to see why. Set in the middle of Lake Pichola, the palace looks like it’s floating, giving you a surreal, fairy-tale vibe from the moment you arrive. Originally built in 1746 as a royal residence, staying here feels like stepping into a piece of history, complete with stunning Rajasthani architecture and intricate marble carvings.
I chose this hotel to experience the magic of staying on a lake, and it absolutely did not disappoint. From the grandeur of the palace to the impeccable service and peaceful atmosphere, every corner was breathtaking. It truly felt like a dream holiday, and I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to indulge in luxury. Whether for a romantic getaway or a special occasion, the Taj Lake Palace is a must-visit for a slice of royal luxury.
If you’re planning your trip, I’d suggest visiting Udaipur between October and March. The weather is perfect during this time—cool mornings, warm afternoons, and stunning sunsets over the lake. Trust me, you’ll want to spend your days soaking in that peaceful, serene atmosphere by the lake without dealing with the intense heat of summer.
Getting to the Taj Lake Palace
Getting to the Taj Lake Palace is part of the charm. Since it’s located on its own island in Lake Pichola, you’ll need to take a short boat ride from the Udaipur City Palace jetty. And let me tell you, that boat ride is something else—the view of the palace shimmering on the water as you approach is nothing short of magical. It really sets the tone for the rest of your stay.
The hotel is super convenient to reach from any of Udaipur’s top attractions. Whether you’re coming from the Udaipur City Palace, the Jag Mandir, a neighboring hotel or the bustling Old City, it’s all just a quick boat ride away. The concierge desk will be in touch with you to arrange your inhouse transfer. The boats at Taj Lake Palace are the ones with canopies and in my opinion – the classiest designed ones! Some of these boat operators have been with Taj for 15+ years! You get a welcome drink at the jetty while your luggage is scanned and you’re off!
One of my favorite parts of this hotel is the arrival in the boats! They shower you with rose petals and you step right into a luxe royal treatment even before check in!
The Room Experience
Honestly, the rooms at the Taj Lake Palace are next-level when it comes to luxury. Every single detail—from the traditional Rajasthani décor to the incredible views of Lake Pichola—makes you feel like royalty. There are a few room categories to choose from, depending on your vibe. If you’re after something more affordable but still stunning, the deluxe lake-view rooms are perfect. But if you’re really in the mood to splurge, the royal suites are where it’s at. You get this amazing mix of heritage charm and modern luxury, with décor that includes rich fabrics, intricate wall carvings, and those gorgeous arches that are classic Udaipur.
When I visited in 2021, I stayed in a Luxury Room Lake View, and let me tell you, waking up to the view of Lake Pichola and City Palace from my window was unreal. This time, we stayed in a suite with a view of Jag Mandir, and it was even more stunning. More lake, more birds, more elegant boats crossing—I honestly couldn’t have picked a better view! The room had this stunning four-poster bed, and it was honestly the comfiest I’ve ever slept in. The whole space just felt so regal, with little details like handcrafted Rajasthani designs on the walls. But it wasn’t just about the aesthetics; the room had all the modern amenities you’d expect—like a massive flat-screen TV, a stocked minibar, and one of those dreamy rain showers in the bathroom.
What really stood out to me was how well they balance that old-world palace charm with modern comforts. I felt like I was stepping back in time with the historical vibe, but everything was so fresh and luxurious. Whether you’re chilling in your room or soaking in those panoramic lake views, it’s an experience you’ll never forget. If you’re going to stay at the Taj Lake Palace, I highly recommend going for a room with a view—it’s worth every penny!

Dining at the Taj Lake Palace
When it comes to dining at the Taj Lake Palace, the culinary experience is just as grand as the palace itself. There are two standout options—Neel Kamal and Jharokha—that really cater to every taste. At Neel Kamal, you’ll find authentic Indian cuisine with rich, traditional flavors that totally blew me away. The dal makhani and paneer tikka are reliable favorites but the flavors here are so rich that it really elevates the classic dishes! They also serve an incredible range of Rajasthani dishes, so if you’re in the mood to try something local, you can’t go wrong with the Laal Maas (a spicy Rajasthani lamb curry). Hands down, the best Laal Maas I had when visiting India. Meanwhile, Jharokha offers a mix of international cuisine if you’re in the mood for something a little lighter or more familiar, like their perfectly cooked seafood pasta.
What really stood out were the drinks. The bar serves everything from classic cocktails to unique, locally inspired drinks that really hit the spot. I highly recommend trying a masala chai martini—it’s unlike anything I’ve had before. And don’t even get me started on the private dining options! We had an unforgettable dinner by the lake, surrounded by lanterns and the shimmering reflections of the palace on the water. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic evening, and if you get the chance, I’d suggest booking a private dining experience in one of the palace courtyards. It’s intimate, elegant, and truly magical—one of the most memorable parts of my stay!
At Neel Kamal, the fine-dining restaurant at the Taj Lake Palace, you can indulge in the Royal Thali—a lavish feast that showcases the rich flavors of Rajasthani cuisine. The Thali included a variety of authentic dishes like Dal Baati Choorma, Laal Maas, Ker Saangri- all served on a lavish spread that feels truly regal. Leave room for the decadent desserts like Ras Malai and Rabdi Jalebi!
Facilities & Activities at Taj Lake Palace
The Taj Lake Palace is packed with facilities and activities that make your stay feel like a royal retreat. First off, the outdoor pool is a dream. It’s set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Pichola, with luxurious loungers that are perfect for soaking in the sun. The pool itself is beautifully designed, surrounded by intricate tile work, and it’s an ideal spot to relax after a day of exploring. The iconic mango tree is shaped like a heart. This is one of the most aesthetic pools I’ve ever seen in the entire world. Pictures barely do it justice. And if you’re into some serious relaxation, the Jiva Spa is a must. This world-class spa offers everything from traditional Indian therapies to modern treatments. I indulged in the signature Jiva massage, and it was pure bliss. You can also just take a moment to wander the grand courtyards—the architecture and tranquil atmosphere make it easy to unwind. The palace grounds are filled with hidden corners that make you feel like you’re exploring an ancient royal haven.
Don’t miss out on the boat rides across Lake Pichola! Gliding across the water with views of the palace and Jag Mandir is an experience you won’t forget. Plus, the palace’s location is ideal for excursions—Udaipur City Palace is just a short ride away, and you can easily visit nearby attractions like Jag Mandir. Whether you’re exploring the city or lounging at the pool, there’s always something to keep you captivated at the Taj Lake Palace.
When it comes to activities, you’re in for a treat. They have daily cultural performances, which give you a taste of Rajasthani heritage—perfect if you want to dive deeper into the local culture.
Service & Hospitality
The service at the Taj Lake Palace is truly in a league of its own. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with such warmth that you instantly feel like royalty. The staff go above and beyond to make sure every little detail of your stay is perfect, whether it’s the refreshing welcome drink they serve when you step off the boat or the personalized care throughout your stay. During my visit, one of the butlers noticed that I loved the local sweets and, without me even asking, surprised us with a beautifully wrapped box of traditional Rajasthani mithai on our last evening—such a thoughtful touch! Little gestures like that really elevate the experience and make you feel like the staff genuinely care about making your stay unforgettable. Whether it’s arranging a private boat tour on Lake Pichola or recommending the perfect spot to watch the sunset, the team at Taj Lake Palace ensures you feel pampered every step of the way.
Why Taj Lake Palace is Worth the Splurge
Let’s be real—the Taj Lake Palace is definitely a splurge, but it’s one that’s absolutely worth it. This isn’t just another luxury hotel; it’s an experience that blends history, romance, and unmatched luxury in a way that no other stay in Udaipur can. The fact that you’re staying on a palace that’s literally on an island in Lake Pichola is what sets it apart from other high-end hotels in the city. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of luxurious options in Udaipur, but the charm of arriving by boat and staying in a palace that once hosted royals is something else entirely. For couples, especially honeymooners, this is the spot. The setting is impossibly romantic with those stunning lake views and candlelit dinners by the water. But even if you’re traveling solo, it’s the perfect spot for a luxury getaway that will leave you feeling spoiled and rejuvenated. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you’ll remember forever.
My stay at the Taj Lake Palace hotel was nothing short of magical, and if you’re looking for a luxury getaway that combines breathtaking views, impeccable service, and a sense of history, this should be at the top of your bucket list. Whether it’s for a special occasion like a honeymoon, anniversary, or even just a well-deserved escape, you won’t regret splurging on this unforgettable experience. If you’re thinking about visiting Udaipur, I highly recommend planning your stay at the Taj Lake Palace. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that leaves you feeling completely in awe—and you’ll be talking about it long after you’ve left.
