Visiting Udawalawe Safari and Stay at Kottawatta River Bank Resort

If you’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka and love wildlife, a safari in Udawalawe National Park needs to be on your list. The main attraction here? Elephants—and tons of them! I adore elephants, so I jumped at the chance to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. It’s one of those places that just blows you away with its raw beauty even on the drive there! The jeeps are pretty loud, but they don’t scare the animals away, so it’s really easy to see up to 10 elephants on any given safari. I was surprised at how accustomed the elephants were to the safari jeeps—they just stand there, slightly curious but also slightly bored. It makes for great photo ops, and you’ll have tons of elephant pics after this safari, but it doesn’t quite give the same feeling you might get in a completely segregated habitat or on a safari in Africa.

What's the best time to visit Udawalawe Safari?

It was slightly chilly and kinda misty, but perfect conditions for a safari when we visited in May. I promise it’s one of those experiences you’ll never forget. If you’re planning a safari at Udawalawe National Park, the ideal time is from October to January when larger herds gather around water sources for mating. The best time to visit Sri Lanka is between November and April in the southwest and February to September in the northeast. During these months, the weather is pretty great—and less rain means smoother safari drives, plus the animals won’t be hiding in shelters, making them easier to spot. If you want a higher chance of seeing those amazing elephants up close, this is definitely the time to visit.

Getting to Udawalawe, Sri Lanka

Getting to Udawalawe is pretty straightforward, but it’s good to know all your options. If you’re coming from Colombo, it’s about a 4-5 hour drive, and the roads are decent. From Ella, which is closer—it’s only around 2 hours and this is how most people from our Safari visited. You can grab a taxi, or if you’re feeling adventurous, rent a car and drive yourself. Just make sure you’ve got a decent map or GPS because some parts can be a bit tricky. The journey itself is quite scenic, so it’s not a bad drive at all. In fact the journey to the Udawalawe National Park entrance from Ella takes you across so many elephants that you can see right from the road!

What to expect on Udawalawe Safari

Now, the good stuff—the safari! The whole experience is just thrilling, from the moment you hop in the jeep to when you spot your first elephant. It’s a really scenic drive approaching the national park and you pass by a few lakes. Udawalawe is famous for its elephant population, and trust me, you’ll see plenty. They’re just so majestic up close! Besides elephants, you might catch sight of peacocks, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys, large monitor lizards and if you’re really lucky, maybe even a leopard. Although, fair warning leopards are pretty elusive at Udawalawe and much more common at Yala National Park. The best time to go is either early morning or late afternoon when the animals are most active. Don’t forget your camera—you’re going to want to capture these moments!

Tips for a successful Udawalawe Safari
  • Pack light but don’t forget the essentials—sunblock, a hat, water, and your camera.
  • Wear comfy clothes that you don’t mind getting a bit dusty; skip anything too fancy.
  • Book a guided tour through your hotel; it’s often cheaper than prebooking online. They’ll have a reliable, knowledgeable guide—they know where to find the animals and can share interesting facts.
  • Be patient—wildlife doesn’t work on our schedule, so relax and enjoy the ride.

What's the best place to stay for an Udawalawe Safari?

Once again, I really outdid myself on picking out our hotel. 😛 Kottawatta River Bank Resort made our safari trip so amazing! It’s hands down the best place to stay if you’re visiting Udawalawe. The location is super convenient, just a short 15-minute drive from the park, which means you can easily catch those early morning safaris without a hassle. The hotel itself is lovely—think cozy rooms, amazing food, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel so relaxed. The staff help book a safari including transport there and back which makes the entire stay seamless and very convenient. I couldn’t have asked for a better base for my safari adventures. If you’re planning a trip to Udawalawe, seriously can’t recommend this place enough!

When I was searching for a place to stay, having a pool was at the top of my list. I wanted somewhere that really gave off those safari vibes, you know? Luxury glamping tents are usually pretty pricey, so finding one in the mid-hundreds felt like a steal. I was so pumped when I stumbled upon this spot, and even more excited when I realized it actually looked just like the pictures!

Booking, Arrival, and Check-In Process

Booking a stay at Kottawatta River Bank Resort was super easy—I did it online, and everything was confirmed quickly with no hassle. When I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by how smooth the check-in process was. After a long day of travel, the last thing you want is to be stuck in a slow check-in line, but that wasn’t the case here. The staff was incredibly welcoming and efficient, getting me settled into my room in no time. They even offered a refreshing welcome drink, which was a nice touch after the journey. If you’re looking for a stress-free start to your Udawalawe adventure, this place has you covered right from the moment you arrive.

Property Overview and Accommodation Experience

Let me tell you, Kottawatta River Bank Resort is like a hidden gem tucked away by the river. The property itself is absolutely gorgeous, with lush greenery and a peaceful vibe that makes you feel like you’re really immersed in nature. My room was spacious, clean, and had all the comforts you’d expect. The best part? Waking up to the sound of birds chirping and the river flowing made me feel like a jungle disney princess. It was the perfect retreat after a day of safari adventures. The bed was super comfy, the air conditioning worked like a charm (a lifesaver in the Sri Lankan heat!), and the overall vibe was just so relaxing. Whether you’re there for one night or a longer stay, you’ll definitely feel at home.

Dining Experience

One of the highlights of staying at Kottawatta River Bank Resort is definitely the dining experience. Besides our Airbnb in Ella, the food here was the best I had! It was the most authentic and flavorful out of all the hotels we stayed at. The on-site restaurant serves up a delicious mix of Sri Lankan and international cuisine, so whether you’re in the mood for something local or craving a taste of home, they’ve got you covered. I particularly loved their Sri Lankan Mee goreng—this noodle dish was packed with flavor and just the right amount of spice. The outdoor dining area is another win, offering a serene setting by the river that makes every meal feel special. Based on the reviews, it’s clear that many guests, including myself, left with satisfied taste buds and full hearts. The hotel recently hired their new restaurant staff who’ve been putting a lot of effort into revamping their menu and as of 2024, I can guarantee it’s definitely worth eating at. If you’re planning to stay here, don’t skip out on a meal onsite!

Key Features, Facilities, and Amenities

First off, there’s a beautiful outdoor pool that’s perfect for cooling off after a hot day in the national park. I loved lounging by the pool with a book and just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The on-site restaurant serves up some delicious Sri Lankan cuisine—don’t miss out on their curry, it’s amazing! They also have a lovely outdoor dining area where you can enjoy your meals with a view of the river. The resort offers free Wi-Fi, which was fast and reliable, so staying connected was a breeze. And if you’re into nature, they offer some great guided tours and activities right from the property. Overall, the resort’s amenities really add to the whole experience, making it not just a place to sleep, but a place to truly unwind and enjoy your time in Udawalawe.

Value for Money

In terms of value for money, Kottawatta River Bank Resort really delivers. Given its prime location near Udawalawe National Park, the resort offers a surprisingly affordable stay without compromising on quality. The rooms are spacious, the service is top-notch, and the amenities are more than you’d expect at this price point. Many guests, myself included, found it to be one of the best affordable stays near Udawalawe National Park which means it’s usually always booked out. If you’re looking for a place that gives you great bang for your buck, this resort is a solid pick.

Ideal for Different Types of Travelers

Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with your family, this resort has you covered. The place is super versatile—there are comfy rooms for families, romantic spots for couples, and chill areas where solo travelers can just kick back. We actually met a solo traveler there who gave us some awesome recs and even joined us for a safari in the same jeep! Families were loving the pool too—it’s the perfect spot to cool off after a safari. From what I saw and from the guest reviews, this resort is a top pick for families, solo adventurers, and honeymooners alike. Honestly, no matter who you’re traveling with, you’ll find something here that works for everyone.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices

What really impressed me about Kottawatta River Bank Resort is their commitment to sustainability. They’ve taken noticeable steps to reduce their environmental impact, which I really appreciated. For instance, the resort uses eco-friendly products and has a strong focus on waste management, ensuring that they’re not just a beautiful place to stay, but also a responsible one. It’s a great feeling to know that you’re staying at one of the more eco-friendly resorts in Udawalawe, where your visit doesn’t come at the expense of the environment. If you care about sustainability, this place is definitely a good choice.

Tips for Kottawatta River Bank Resort

  • Book your room early, BUT DON’T STRESS ABOUT BOOKING A SAFARI TOUR ONLINE! Lock in your room early if you’re planning to visit during peak season—the best rooms like the luxury A-Frame tents tend to go fast. But if your able to secure a room, the hotel will definitely be able to go on a safari.
  • Check for special offers or packages—they can make your stay more affordable like booking your safari through them! I was able to call them once I was in Sri Lanka and book directly with them instead of having to book online which cost significantly more. This also ensured that we were with a knowledgable guide for the safari!
